Overview

Located in the heart of Chew Magna since 1615, The Pelican is one of The Pony Family’s most iconic pubs. LUX was brought on board to design and build a new website that honours the pub’s long-standing heritage while embracing its stylish new identity.

The project balances storytelling with usability - providing visitors with clear, engaging pathways to explore the menu, book a table, and get a feel for the warm, welcoming space. The result is a site that both respects tradition and looks to the future.

Design approach

The visual identity for The Pelican’s website is rooted in a sense of place. Drawing inspiration from the natural textures of Chew Valley stone and the refined yet rustic interiors of the pub, the colour palette is muted, earthy, and quietly confident.

The font draws inspiration from the original pub signage outside, surprisingly modern with excellent readability. Layouts are intentionally spacious and editorial in feel, allowing the imagery and story of the pub to breathe.

Overall, the design communicates heritage, warmth, and quality - capturing the spirit of The Pelican in a digital experience that feels both timeless and current.
